How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews
On this page
Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search volume would drop 25% by 2026 as users move to AI chatbots and virtual agents. In October 2026 the market made the same call: Alphabet shares sank on a search revenue miss and the Business Post reported a $500bn wipeout. The AI answer layer is now a distribution channel in its own right, and this is the playbook for getting cited in it.
1. Publish answer-first content
AI engines look for a direct, quotable answer in plain language. For every important customer question, publish a page that states the answer in the first two sentences, then supports it with specifics: prices, locations, timelines, comparisons. The model does not need to read 1,000 words to find your point, and neither do your customers.
2. Structure for machines
- Structured data. JSON-LD schema so models can parse your facts unambiguously: products, prices, FAQs, addresses.
- FAQ sections. Real questions with direct answers, marked up as FAQPage.
- llms.txt. A roadmap for AI crawlers pointing at your key content. We covered the mechanics in our llms.txt explainer.
- Clean, fast pages. Models and search engines both deprioritize sites that are slow to crawl. See technical SEO in the AI era.
3. Be consistent about who you are
AI models reconcile your entity across sources. Your name, address, phone, and service descriptions should match everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles, and press mentions. Contradictions make models unsure, and unsure models do not cite you. For local businesses this is the same discipline as our local SEO guide.
4. Earn mentions on the sites models read
Citations follow authority. Reviews on platforms consumers actually use, coverage in Irish trade press, directory listings, and partnerships all signal that you are a real, trusted operator. One well-read article that names your business is worth more than ten unread blog posts.
5. Keep the facts fresh
Models favor current information. Update your pages when prices, regulations, or products change, and keep publishing on a rhythm. A static site from 2022 reads as stale to a model asked about 2026.
6. Measure AI share of voice
You cannot manage what you do not measure. Track, for your target queries, how often your brand is cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews versus competitors, and whether the model describes you accurately. We covered the metric in how to measure AI share of voice.
How we do it
Our AI search visibility service runs the full loop: a baseline of your AI share of voice, the technical and content fixes, and ongoing monitoring. One client went from invisible to consistently cited in its category within two quarters, documented in the AI search visibility case study.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT?
Publish answer-first content on your site for the questions your customers ask, back it with structured data, keep your entity details consistent everywhere, and earn mentions on the sites AI models read: reviews, press, and directories.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Weeks for well-structured pages on low-competition questions; months for competitive categories. Citations compound, so the earliest consistent publishers win the flywheel.
What is llms.txt and do I need it?
It is a machine-readable file that tells AI crawlers what your site contains and where the key pages are. It is fast to add and it removes friction for the crawlers that feed AI answers.
Do AI Overviews and ChatGPT use the same signals as Google rankings?
They overlap but are not the same. AI engines weight quotability, structure, and source trust heavily. A page can rank on Google and still never be cited, which is why we measure AI share of voice separately.
Can I force an AI to recommend my brand?
No, and attempts to manipulate models are short-lived. The durable play is being genuinely the best answer: specific, current, verifiable, and structured.
How do I know if it is working?
Track your AI share of voice: for your target queries, how often your brand is cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and whether the model describes you correctly.
